50,000 Words in a Month

Guess what? I've signed up to National Novel Writing Month, which means that I am joining many thousands of writers all over the world in writing at least 50,000 words over the course of November. Last year there were 167,150 participants, and the concept has captured more and more writers' imaginations since its humble beginnings in 1999 when 21 people signed up.

Don't ask how I expect to find the time or motivation to achieve the goal of writing 1667 words per day, or what I plan to write about - I've decided to wing it, inspired by the instructions (on the NaNoWriMo website) to write now and edit later. I like the idea of stream of consciousness writing, knowing that amongst the rubbish there may be some pearls. Anyway, forcing myself to have the discipline to write such a huge amount is a great challenge, and will hopefully help me to develop my technique.

It's day one, and so far I've written 1717 words. Success!
Anyone want to join me?

It's very exciting! :D

  1. I would love to join you, and I will. But I have no idea how I'm going to fit that in, because I have to write a ghost story for Creative Writing next week, and I also have to write a Hub and a blog entry each day. On second thoughts, maybe I'll have to leave this one until next year. Because I've also got two competition entries to smarten up for the end of the month, and a personal statement to write.

    1667 a day though - it's so tempting.

Ahhhhh, no! I'm already neglecting my children enough at the moment. I'll do it next year. Please remind me!

  2. Ooooh! I did this a few (pre-Jake) years ago. It made me crazy but I managed to complete 50,000 words two years in a row. I'm almost tempted to join you but I'm just back from hols so have already missed out on a precious whole week, plus, I can't fathom how I'd find the time to do it now! Enjoy! x

  3. Hmm, probably a wise choice, both of you! If you joined up now (with 24 days left) you'd have to write 2083 words a day... Not easy with kids! I'm finding it hard enough with a 9 week old baby! I'm not neglecting her in order to do it though, it has to happen while she's asleep obviously. Just in case you had your doubts! :D
